Hardys Hogtown Brasserie

Last night a friend and I headed up to St Clair to check out the soft opening of the newest BBQ joint to open up in the city – Hardys Hogtown Brasserie. I had been in contact with them over twitter and knew I could expect yummy smokey BBQ and a fantastic selection of Ontario Craft Beer on tap.

When we walked through their doors the amazing smokey smell of cherry wood filled the restaurant and we were immediately greeted with a welcoming smile. The server was great, chatted with us about the opening and got us excited to try the food. We ordered drinks, me – a Muskoka Toms IPA and my friend – Hardy’s own homemade Dark and Stormy. They have about 12 different OCB on tap which is great for a beer enthusiast like me.

We started with a sample plate of potato salad, coleslaw, and their pulled pork sandwich – all super good. The pulled pork was one of the best I have had. I don’t normally like pulled pork sandwiches because they always seem to be over sauced and the pork just gets lost in it. Well, let me tell you – Hardy’s pulled pork was so tender and because there was little sauce on it, the smokiness came out and went so well with the coleslaw on top. Good job guys! Seriously.

We then shared the smoked chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens, and the oh so amazingly good jalapeno cornbread muffin. Again, all really good – there was a maple whisky glaze on the chicken that complimented the smoke so well. The mac and cheese however could have used a little more sharpness to it to give it more of a kick – we told our server this and she said they were thinking of smoking the cheese they used in the future – like how good does that sound!? They could also use a signature homemade hot sauce.. I mean really what BBQ joint doesn’t have that?

Because it was a soft opening the menu was small and only had a few items to choose from. The owner John Hardy came over and chatted with us about what else we could anticipate seeing on the official menu, like ribs and of course brisket. The grand opening is happening next week so make sure to go check it out!! Yum num num..

Congratulations to JJ and his staff! We’re spreading the news up and down the East Coast and from the tiny island of Nantucket , way out in the Atlantic Ocean.
    All the best,
    Your friends, Jim and Mims
