An Avocado Impulse Buy at the Market

Yes that’s right, I impulsively bought an avocado while shopping in Kensington Market this weekend. It was just so strange looking, just different from any avocado I had ever seen before to the point where I actually thought it was a mango at first. The person I was with said Erin, I think its an avocado. I was like no, it cant be – it’s a mango. It was way larger and lighter in colour than any avocado I had ever seen. We asked the man behind us stocking the bananas and he confirmed that it was in fact an avocado. I was fascinated and had to buy it, I wanted to see the difference, if any there was between this one and the Hass avocado we typically find here.

I got it home and cut it in half, it was a little watery and tasted really mild compared to the Hass. It was still creamy in texture but just not as flavourful on its own, so I decided to make an avocado cream with it for the fish tacos I am going to make this week – I used a small food processor and blended garlic, juice of half a lemon, salt, pepper, and 1 tbs of yogurt ranch dressing.

Now the big question is what kind of avocado is this? I have looked at many different pictures and types on the Internet and I still have no idea what this one is called – does anyone know?

Hey lady! You know what’s weird? I had a bizarre avocado experience yesterday! I was at Longos and they had massive avocados called ‘pear avocados’. I didn’t buy one, because I had no idea if it was going to be like an avocado or like a pear (and I hate pears…they are a textural nightmare). Maybe it’s a pear avocado? It kinda looks like the one I saw!

You know, it looks a lot like the avocados (aguacates) I would get at the market in Bogota, Colombia. They were MASSIVE, but very good. Nothing like fresh homemade guacamole! I haven’t seen any of these guys here in Ottawa though. I have no idea what their real name is…
