Last Tuesday night Hawker Bar open their doors and their kitchen to friends and family for a taste of what’s to come from the newest addition to the popular restaurant strip. You could feel the love as soon as you walked in, maybe from all the people who had come out to support their friends or from the red heart coloured walls and accents around the restaurant. It was small, cozy and alive with excitement inside, I loved the wood inspired decor. The smells of sweet curry and grilling meat that filled the air made me literally say “mmmmm” out loud as I took my seat. We tried a few items from the menu – everything sounded great.
Prices were great and the food is easy to share – so come in to try a few items off the menu and enjoy! We tried the deep fried soft boiled eggs with chili jam – I didnt like these very much. It was a big mouth full of gooey egg and I wish the chili jam was a little more dippable. We then got into the Singapore Chicken Wings which were like crack and I couldn’t get enough. These are marinated in a soy dressing for hours, then rolled in an oatmeal like textured crust and then tossed in a sweet and sour chili glaze. I loved the crunch on these so much – make sure you ask for the house-made hot sauce to dip!
We tried the Laksa soup which was sweet, spicy and full of coconut and red curry flavor – addictive. I would like to see a seafood version of this soup in the future as that’s what I normally associate with this south Asian dish. One more item we tried was the Rendang Curry made with braised oxtail and served with amazing coconut rice. This was a very rich dish – the coconut rice was outstanding!
Check out Hawker Bar it is well worth it! Keep updated on their hours – these guys are going to be open later in hopes to also serve a later crowd – read more about that here.
